Northern Australia

is a global treasure,
but it’s under threat.

Let’s shape the Great North’s future with wisdom, care and the courage to imagine something better.

The future of Australia will be decided in its Great North.

Northern Australia is home to the world’s largest remaining tropical savanna, vast wetlands and intact coastlines, and the highest concentration of free-flowing rivers remaining in Australia.

First Nations people continue to manage our landscapes, as they have for tens of thousands of years. From Cape York to Uluru, Kakadu to the Kimberley, these places and peoples are of global significance.

Yet the Great North stands on the frontline of climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse. Fossil fuel expansion, thirsty cotton and industrial developments are intensifying heat, depleting rivers and aquifers, and pushing species toward extinction, while continuing patterns of displacement and decisions made without consent. For over 150 years, promises of prosperity through large-scale extraction have left communities with damaged landscapes and fragile economies.

The North cannot afford another century of the same. The Northern Australia Conservation Alliance exists to change the trajectory of our Great North. We believe in a future where Country is valued and protected, democracy is thriving, and people are prioritised over profit.

We can’t do it alone. Let’s shape the Great North’s future together.
